The Government of Madhya Pradesh has enunciated the State Biotechnology Policy in 2003 to tap the potential of Biotechnology for the socio-economic development of citizens of the state. The Council is authorised to oversee the implementation of this policy by coordinating and promoting biotechnology in the sectors of education, research and industry. The Council endeavors to act as a link among academia, research and industry.
The Council sponsors short term "Hands-on Training Programmes" for M.Sc./M.Tech Biotechnology students and the faculty members working in different universities and colleges. Training is provided in diverse areas of biotechnology in collaboration with research and education institutions of the state specializing in a given area. The Council provides financial assistance to State Universities/Colleges / R&D Institutions / NGOs for undertaking research projects in Biotechnology. Research projects have been funded in areas related to medical & healthcare, biodiversity conservation, animal husbandry, bioinformatics, industrial & rural development. To provide quality education and encourage research in bio-sciences and technology, an Institute of Life Sciences and Technology (ILST) is proposed to be established in the State under the Public-Private-Partnership mode. To promote the development of Industrial units of biotechnology, a Biotechnology Park is proposed to be established under the Public-Private-Partnership mode. Besides, Council is working to generate awareness about biotechnology and its applications by organizing radio talks, biotechnology competitive events, symposium/seminar, showcasing its activities in various conferences and bringing out quarterly Newsletter, brochures etc.
